We’ve been working with the incredible team at Solar Sister since 2014. They help women in Africa become energy entrepreneurs. They provide them with business skills, sales training and a pipeline of reliable, affordable clean energy products to sell to their communities.
After our initial project together – which debuted at the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting – they approached us with an exciting opportunity. They wanted to create a series of videos to showcase what happens after the light comes.
So, we traveled to Tanzania and spent a month with their incredible female energy entrepreneurs. In the end, we created six video portraits, featuring six different entrepreneurs, each with a specific impact on their community that goes beyond the light for a campaign called WE Shine.
A midwife brings light to childbirth. A nurse brings solar to clinics in cities without reliable electric grids. A schoolteacher shows how light can help students do better in school. A businesswoman learns the business tools to grow her local trade into a profitable enterprise. A farmer helps her neighbors cut down on burning dangerous kerosene. A mother brings clean cooking to her community – cutting down the hours her peers spend on preparing meals.
